Read the Signs
Suggested ages: 0-2 years
Some days, there's no time to read a whole book. But we’re surrounded by words that are ready for reading. So today, read every sign or billboard aloud to your child and talk to them about what each means.
Brainy Background™:
Doesn't matter if it's a book, a magazine, or a bus stop sign! It all counts. Reading to your child, anywhere and everywhere, helps them develop a rich, diverse vocabulary.
A Love Note
Suggested ages: 18 months - 3 years
Before you get in the bus or car, draw your child an “I love you” note. Be sure to add some words. Fold it and write their name on it. Give it to them in the car to open and look at. Talk about what it says and how it makes you both feel. When you get home, ask them to “draw” you a love note.

Who Lives There?
Suggested ages: 3-5 years
As you pass a house or apartment building on a walk or a drive, ask your child, “Who do you think lives there?” Talk about what a person’s name might be, their favorite foods and games, what language they speak, and who might be in their family.
Brainy Background™:
As your child imagines “who lives there,” through a back and forth conversation with you, their imagination grows. They're learning how to come up with original and creative ideas—skills that are useful in solving problems and communicating with others.
The ABC Game
Suggested ages: 4-5 years
When you’re out and about with your child, play "The ABC Game." Take turns spotting each letter in the alphabet from A to Z on road signs, billboards, cars, licenses, and more! Write out the letters so they can match them with what they see.
Brainy Background™:
The "ABC Game" helps your child practice making connections—where your child matches letters with what they see in the world around them. They're also learning letters, which helps them learn to read and write.
